Our Mission

Black Health Initiative seeks to improve the health and wellness for all residents of Santa Cruz County through cultural programs and services. Our Initiative focuses on mental health and is open to anyone, regardless of race, gender, religion, and political affiliation for a healthy and vibrant community for ALL.

WE ACHIEVE OUR MISSION THROUGH THREE MAIN PROGRAMS

CULTURAL AND OUTDOOR EVENTS

Over the past 4 years we have learned that SCCBHI services support improved mental health, authentic connection and a stronger and healthier community. From our first hybrid virtual BBQ in 2020, to yoga and wellness classes, cookouts, surfing for the first time with Black Surf Santa Cruz, and nature hikes in county and state parks with our partner organizations, our grassroots efforts exist to respond to the community’s needs and improved quality of life.

COMMUNITY INVESTMENTS

Since 2020, SCCBHI has supported community based individuals, artists and organizations through ongoing community sponsorships and micro-granting to Black led organizations, businesses and individuals curating and producing Black centered events to foster cultural connection, belonging, and agency. We sponsor events based on an application process and provide resources and support for selected community events. BHI also works with other initiatives, including United Way of Santa Cruz County, The Homeless Garden Project, the Karst Foundation, County Park Friends and the Community Foundation of Santa Cruz to provide resources and support to residents in need. Including: CSA shares, funds for families in need, COVID resources, and more.

YOUTH AMBASSADORS

SCC Black Health Initiative Youth Ambassadors program was established to elevate the mental health and wellness of Black youth in Santa Cruz county. Our services focus on fostering authentic, impactful relationships with one another, offering mentorship and educational support, and providing community engagement and leadership opportunities.  by allowing data to inform and guide our work. Data is our learning tool to drive improvement on the efficacy of program experience and growth. We utilize youth-led and Program Director led data capture resulting in the further development and implementation of mental health and behavioral health programs that center the arts, ongoing group activities, and community service and leadership.

“When Black residents are held in equal measure of a high standard and quality of life in all areas; safe and affordable housing, 21st century education and engagement for our youth, access to healthy foods, and access to parks that are inviting, safe, and inclusive - this is what it means to set the standard of equity in ACTION for our whole community.”
